Meet Mr. Hanchett!
Special Education Teacher, Dexter Elementary School
My name is David Hanchett, and I’m a special education teacher who brings a wide range of life experiences into the classroom. I grew up in the Seattle area, but I bounced around a lot as a kid due to my father’s work, changing schools more often than I changed grades. That experience gave me an early understanding of how challenging school transitions can be and how important it is for students to feel supported and welcomed.
I later spent 12 years in the U.S. Army, an experience that shaped how I approach my work with students—staying calm under pressure, valuing teamwork, and focusing on steady progress rather than perfection. Before becoming a teacher, I worked in several different fields, including construction and tech support, and I originally studied engineering. Along the way, I realized that what I enjoyed most was helping people learn, solve problems, and gain confidence. That realization led me to education and ultimately to special education, where I enjoy working with students as individuals and finding creative ways to support their learning and growth.
In my classroom, I focus on building strong relationships, clear routines, and a supportive environment where students feel safe to take risks and learn at their own pace. I believe collaboration with families and staff is essential, and I value open communication and teamwork as we support each student’s success.
Outside of school, I have been married for 13 years and am the proud parent of three children: a 21-year-old son, a 10-year-old son, and an 8-year-old daughter I affectionately call my “battle princess.” Our home is also shared with four German Shepherds, along with—thanks to my wife—more orange tabby cats than we probably need. I enjoy spending time with my family and embracing the busy, sometimes chaotic, but always rewarding nature of family life.
All the Best,
Mr. Hanchett
